Review: Battle at Big Rock
Battle at Big Rock is a 2019 short film that acts as both a sequel, to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and a prequel, to the upcoming Jurassic World 3. The short was directed by Colin Trevorrow and written by Emily Carmichael.
Synopsis:
After the events of Fallen Kingdom, dinosaurs now roam the world with humans. A family on a camping trip at Big Rock National Park takes part in one of the first major confrontations between dinosaurs and humans. The young family has to band together to survive a ferocious dinosaur battle.
Positives:
- The effects are surprisingly well done and effective for a project of this scale.
- The short does a great job of bringing back the idea that humans are in awe of dinosaurs. Something we haven’t really seen since 1993’s Jurassic Park.
- Battle at Little Rock really gets you excited for Jurassic World 3 – more so than even Fallen Kingdom did.
Negatives:
- While the effects are well done for a short film, they still aren’t quite up to the standards of the franchise. But, this is understandable when you consider the limited resources the filmmakers had.
In Closing:
Battle at Big Rock feels closer to the tone of Jurassic Park than it does the Jurassic World films – and that is a good thing. It’s an exciting 8 minute ride that really gets you excited for where the franchise is going.
