Review: Men In Black
Men In Black opened in theaters on July 2, 1997. The sci-fi comedy stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The Amblin film was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld & Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg.
Synopsis:
A young New York cop has a violent encounter with a dangerous creature. A hard nosed agent of the Men In Black then introduces him to a brand new world where aliens live amongst us. The unlikely duo must now team up to stop an alien threat that may destroy earth.
Positives:
- Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are both excellent in the film and they share a unique chemistry.
- The special effects, both practical and digital, are very well done and hold up well.
- The film is only about 90 minutes long and it breezes through that short runtime with an impressive pace.
Negatives:
- The aliens hiding amongst us story is interesting and even though the film is a lot of fun, it feels like more could have been done with the high concept.
In Closing:
Men In Black really capitalizes on the star power of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The effects and action set pieces are all done exceptionally. Men In Black is one of Amblin’s most creative and enjoyable films.
