Review: The Mask of Zorro
The Mask of Zorro opened on July 17, 1998. The Amblin adventure starred Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The film was directed by Martin Campbell and Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg.
Synopsis:
A young thief (Banderas) is seeking revenge for the death of his brother. He is then recruited by the legendary Zorro (Hopkins) – who is also looking for revenge for the murder of his wife and kidnapping of his daughter (Jones). Zorro trains the criminal to take his place as the legendary protector of the innocent. The duo then teams up to seek retribution on their enemies.
Positives:
- The Mask Of Zorro features great performances from its three leads – Hopkins, Banderas and Jones.
- The action sequences are all well executed and paced. The stunt work is exceptional.
- The film features direction, and screenwriting, that is superior to most films of its kind – especially in the 1990s.

Negatives:
- Hopkins and Jones playing Mexican characters doesn’t age well in today’s cultural climate.
- The film is slow in parts. 10-15 minutes could of easily been trimmed from the final product.
In Closing:
The Mask Of Zorro is one of the best action/adventure films to come out of the 90s. It features strong performances from its superstar cast and an engaging story. The Mask Of Zorro balances adventure, romance and humor successfully.
