Review: The Little Rascals
The Little Rascals opened on August 5, 1994. The film was directed by Penelope Spheeris. It was based on the classic comedy series from the 1930s.
Synopsis:
Alfalfa clashes with his best friend, Spanky, over his love, Darla. Spanky sabotages his friend’s relationship and Alfalfa has to try his best to salvage his romantic life. The boys and the rest of the "He-Man-Woman-Hating" club find themselves in a series of adventures as they try to avoid girls and win the Soap Box Derby.
Positives:
- The young cast is charming and they do provide laughs, especially the child actor who plays Alfalfa.
- Kids will definitely enjoy seeing the young performers dominate the story and screen time.
Negatives:
- There isn’t much in the film for adults to enjoy—it’s almost exclusively a movie for kids.
- A stronger story was needed to justify the film being full length. The Little Rascals is content with just being a faithful remake of the Our Gang series.
In Closing:
The Little Rascals is a film kids will enjoy, but it offers very little for older viewers. The young cast is likable and the film moves quickly. The Little Rascals is a decent way to distract young viewers for a while.
