Zoë Kravitz Discusses Painful Move to Dad After Parents' Split

Zoë Kravitz shared her feelings about moving in with her father, Lenny Kravitz, after her parents' separation. She described the transition as "very hurtful" because it meant leaving her mother, Lisa Bonet.

At 35, the "Batman" actress left her family home in Miami for New York City. The move came after her parents, Lenny, 60, and Bonet, 56, ended their relationship in 1991. "It was very hurtful that I moved away from her to be with my dad, and my dad wasn’t even there," Zoë told Esquire.

Shortly after her relocation, Zoë found herself without parental support as her dad frequently traveled. She reflected on her mother's efforts during that challenging time, noting, "I just wish I had been able to appreciate what she was doing for me [at the time]. She was focused on preserving my innocence and creativity."

Lenny and Lisa's love story began in 1985 after they met at a New Edition concert in Los Angeles. They eloped two years later and welcomed Zoë shortly thereafter. However, the couple split when Zoë was just 2 years old, finalizing their divorce in 1993.

Despite their separation, the former couple maintained a close relationship. In a 2020 interview, Lenny referred to their bond as "essential," expressing unchanged love between them. "(We) love each other just as much as before — it’s just a different situation," he shared with People.

In another reflection, Zoë, also the director of "Blink Twice," discussed how her father’s friendly nature made him vulnerable to exploitation. "I can smell [people’s ulterior motives] out pretty quickly. I had to when I was a kid because he didn’t," she explained during her interview.
