When considering spy movies, names like Daniel Craig or Tom Cruise often come to mind. Yet, the best films in this genre extend beyond glamorous actions and stylish attire. The finest espionage films examine the lives of those involved in covert operations, exposing themes of sacrifice and moral ambiguity. These movies show characters choosing duty and surveillance over personal happiness. Despite their serious themes, action sequences do appear, highlighting the intense realities of the spy world. Here is SSP's list of the five best spy movies ever made.

5. Army of Shadows (1969)

French Resistance stories often resonate well with audiences. "Army of Shadows" is a poignant blend of adventure and moral complexity. Lino Ventura plays Gerbier, a Resistance agent, expertly infiltrating and escaping from Nazi forces in occupied France. Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, this film serves as both an engaging spy thriller and a deeply unsettling exploration of moral compromises that come with such dangerous work.

Throughout the film, Gerbier cleverly executes a series of prison breaks, undertaking harrowing missions with his group of allies. However, they all face the reality of making heart-wrenching decisions under dire circumstances. Released during a politically tumultuous period in France, the film initially faced criticism for its portrayal of the violent tactics of the Resistance. Today, it is seen as a haunting portrayal of the conflict between espionage and moral integrity.

4. Three Days of the Condor (1975)

Many may overlook the mundane aspects of espionage. "Three Days of the Condor," directed by Sydney Pollack, perfectly illustrates the inherent tension between paperwork and thrilling action. Robert Redford portrays a CIA analyst unexpectedly finding himself in grave danger. His character, searching through coded information in spy novels, stumbles upon a top-secret revelation.

Redford's character, known by the codename "Condor," must evade lethal forces stalking him in 1970s New York. With Max von Sydow commanding attention as a menacing hitman, tension builds throughout their chase. Redford's frantic efforts to prevent danger unfold compellingly, even leading to his kidnapping of a photographer played by Faye Dunaway. Their growing attraction neither overshadows the suspense nor eases the precarious atmosphere.

3. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

John le Carré, renowned for intricate tales of espionage, brings rich depth to this genre. As a former MI5 and MI6 operative, he lends authenticity to his narratives. In "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," Gary Oldman delivers an Oscar-nominated performance as George Smiley. Directed by Tomas Alfredson, the film centers on Smiley’s investigation amidst mounting Cold War pressures.

With British intelligence riven by Russian infiltrators, Smiley builds a cohesive team after losing leadership of "The Circus." Portraying intelligence work’s political intricacies, the film balances sudden violence with strategic interplay. Oldman masterfully showcases Smiley's quiet brilliance against the backdrop of tension. The cast, featuring talents like John Hurt and Colin Firth, further enhances the film’s depth and gravitas.

2. Notorious (1946)

Alfred Hitchcock crafted one of his most compelling films with "Notorious." This romantic thriller unravels themes of allegiance, beauty, and moral choices amidst espionage. With star power from Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant, the story delves into personal sacrifice rooted in noble objectives.

After WWII, alcoholic Bergman becomes ensnared in a web woven by a Nazi collaborator. Grant recruits her to infiltrate Nazi remnants in Rio de Janeiro. The tension deepens as Grant faces a conflict between affection for Bergman and his mission’s demands. As Bergman's undercover role becomes increasingly precarious, the stakes rise, revealing inexorable dangers that build suspense throughout this mesmerizing film.

1. The Conversation (1974)

In "The Conversation," Harry Caul embodies a reluctant agent. Gene Hackman presents a complex portrayal of a surveillance expert hired to capture a couple’s secret conversation in a noisy setting. His early success positions him as an adept professional. However, the plot swiftly twists as Harry uncovers a troubling secret.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this film explores the intersections of surveillance and ethical decay. Caul earns a living extracting information, yet he distorts human connections after a past failure, ultimately leaving him isolated. Tension escalates as the peek behind the curtain of espionage takes a toll on his psyche. Hackman's performance poignantly illustrates the conflict inherent in living a life rooted in intrusion and isolation.
