This song became the second joint project between the two artists after Bieber's "Unstable", which appeared on his sixth studio album Justice (2021).

The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming LaRoy's first single and Bieber's eighth single, and topped the Billboard Global 200. In addition, the single reached number one in 21 countries, with 18 other countries reaching the top ten.

At the 2021 ARIA Music Awards, Stay won the ARIA Award for Best Pop Release, and Laroy and Bieber won the ARIA Award for Best Male Artist.
