Amaretto Sour Recipe

If you enjoy the sweet and nutty flavors akin to marzipan, the amaretto sour is a memorable cocktail worth trying, whether for a nightcap or at a dinner party. Popular in the 1970s, this sweet, slightly nutty drink has made a resurgence in the past decade. If you appreciate sweet almond flavors, you'll find this cocktail tailored for you.

Ingredients:

Amaretto Sour Traditional:

• 2 ounces amaretto

• 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
• 1 egg white (optional)
• Ice (for the shaker and serving)
• Garnish: lemon wheel, brandied cherry

Enhanced Variation:

• 1 1/2 ounces amaretto liqueur
• 3/4 ounce cask-proof bourbon

• 1 teaspoon rich simple syrup
• 1/2 ounce egg white
• Garnish: lemon twist, 2 brandied cherries

Method:

With Egg White:

1. In a cocktail shaker without ice, combine the amaretto, lemon juice, and egg white.

2. Shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds until frothy.

3. Fill the shaker halfway with ice and shake again for another 20 seconds to chill.

Without Egg White:

1. Fill the cocktail shaker two-thirds full with ice.

2. Pour in the amaretto and lemon juice, and shake hard for 20 seconds.

Enhanced Variation With Bourbon:

1. Add the amaretto, bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white to the shaker. Dry shake (no ice) for 15 seconds.

2. Add ice and shake until well-chilled.

 Strain and Serve:

Strain the cocktail into a rock glass filled with ice. For the traditional recipe without bourbon, give the shaker a few hard shakes to maximize foam.

Garnish with a lemon wheel and a brandied cherry, or for the enhanced variation, use a lemon twist and two skewered brandied cherries.
