Radish is an unpretentious root vegetable that any beginner can grow. But there are mistakes that gardeners may not be aware of that will spoil the taste of radishes, which can make them grow hollow, bitter, and turn into arrows. This was reported by SSPDaily.
How to grow delicious radishes
- Good lighting. Radishes, like most crops, need sunlight from morning to evening.
- Choose high-quality radish seeds. It is recommended to select or buy seeds with a diameter of at least 2.5 mm; small seeds often produce poor quality roots and are more prone to shooting.
- Acidity and soil composition. Loamy, moisture-rich soil with a neutral pH is best for the root crop. It should be fertilized the year before with organic fertilizers and well cultivated. If there is a lot of sand, the soil will dry out quickly, so it is better to add peat, humus, and compost to the soil.
- Sowing radishes in furrows. Loosen the soil and make furrows about 1 cm deep. Keep the distance between the furrows 20 cm. Water them, sow the seeds and cover them with soil.
- Sow radishes leaving 2-3 cm between plants. Thickening can lead to bitterness. If the crops are sown very densely, thin out the crops 5-6 days after germination, this will not only make it sweet, but also large in size.
- Fertilizing radishes. Before sowing, add ash and complex mineral fertilizer. But be very careful with fertilizers - adding fresh organic matter can cause the radish to remain hollow inside.
- The emerging seedlings are dusted with ash or a mixture of ash and tobacco dust, in a one-to-one ratio to repel pests.
- Feed the radish as needed. If the leaves have turned pale, urgently feed the plants with an instant complex fertilizer.
- Maintain constant soil moisture. The most common cause of radish bitterness is insufficient watering. When there is little moisture in the soil, mustard oil immediately begins to stand out in the root crop, which makes the radish bitter. Water the plants regularly and mulch with dry peat or humus to prevent crusting.
- Harvest radishes on time. The next reason, after insufficient watering, why radishes burn is the time of harvest. If the root vegetables are overripe, they will be bitter.
