How to whiten white clothes at home: tips from experienced housewives

General washing rules

• Sorting the laundry

To prevent white clothes from losing their color and becoming unwanted, it is very important to separate them from clothes of other shades. Therefore, always wash white laundry separately, and if possible, wash it first.

• Wash stains immediately

If you postpone the washing process, the stains will penetrate deeper into the fabric, making it difficult, if not impossible, to remove them completely.

• Determine the nature of the stains

Divide the stains into protein (food, grass) and mineral (soil). Protein stains should be soaked and washed in warm water, while mineral stains should be washed in hot water.

• Wash synthetic and woolen items separately

It is important to wash white cotton and linen clothes separately to prevent them from turning gray.

Ways to bleach clothes

• Use 3% hydrogen peroxide

Mix 2 liters of water with 1 teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide in a bowl. Soak the clothes you want to bleach in this solution for 15 minutes, making sure to stir and turn them every 5 minutes. If you add baking soda to the solution, you will enhance the whitening effect.

• Soaking in baking soda

Dissolve 5 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of ammonia in a 5-liter container of warm water. Soak the clothes you want to bleach in this solution for several hours, and then rinse them thoroughly before washing them in a traditional way.

• Solution of salt and hydrogen peroxide

Pour 2 liters of hot water into a bowl, add 1 tablespoon each of salt and ammonia, and 3 tablespoons each of hydrogen peroxide and laundry detergent. This method is ideal for bleaching wool and cotton fabrics.

• Boric acid solution

To whiten white socks and tights, dissolve a few tablespoons of boric acid in warm water. Soak the clothes for several hours before washing them as usual. Alternatively, you can add a little boric acid directly to the drum of your washing machine.

• Soaking with mustard powder

Revitalize kitchen towels by soaking dirty towels in water and mustard powder. After a few hours, rinse them with water to enjoy the renewed whiteness.
