Oklahoma State's QR Code Initiative Blocked by NCAA

The NCAA has prohibited Oklahoma State football from incorporating QR codes on player helmets, the institution revealed on Saturday. The university had earlier announced plans to place 1.5 square inch QR code decals, which included the players' names and numbers, on the back of helmets. This initiative, which head coach Mike Gundy deemed a "revolutionary step forward," aimed to link fans to the team's Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) fund for all rostered athletes.

Initially set to debut during Saturday's home game against South Dakota State, the NCAA disallowed these tags, citing previous rules against social media handles and hashtags on uniforms. According to the NCAA, any changes to policies on advertising and commercial marks must involve broader discussions within its committees and conference commissioners responsible for game rules.

Chad Weiberg, Oklahoma State's athletic director, expressed disappointment but agreed to comply with the NCAA's stipulations while pushing for rulebook updates. The school argued that the QR codes were institutional decals permitted by NCAA bylaws, a perspective the organization did not share, viewing them instead as commercial adverts.

As an adjustment, the QR codes will now feature prominently within Boone Pickens Stadium, displayed across larger areas like the 6,160-square foot video board and on player bag tags during "The Walk" on game days and during travel throughout the season.

Despite the setback, Oklahoma State allies, including Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, are committed to innovative fundraising methods to enhance athlete NIL valuations. Yormark emphasized the necessity of modernizing NCAA regulations to keep pace with the rapid evolution of college sports, inspired by successful examples of players capitalizing on their names, images, and likenesses.

Subsequently, Oklahoma State has relocated its QR code initiative to more visible stadium locations and commenced its season with a 44-20 triumph over South Dakota State.
