Presidents Cup: International Team Ties USA at 5-5 After Sweeping Victory
The International Team made a monumental comeback on the second day of the Presidents Cup, tying the USA with a 5-0 sweep during Friday’s foursomes. The tournament, now tied 5-5, has two days left to determine the winner.
On the first day, Team USA, led by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, dominated the competition, winning all five four-ball matches. However, Day 2 saw a dramatic reversal. The International Team began strong in their first match, where Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im defeated Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele 7 and 6, a record-tying shortest match.
Adding to the sweep, Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa were outmatched 5 and 4 by Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith. Scott also made history by earning his 22nd point in his 11th International Team appearance. Si Woo Kim and Byeong Hun An secured a 1-up victory over Scheffler and Russell Henley with a pressure-packed 15-foot par putt.
Canadian stars Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes achieved a 6 and 5 win over Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau, while Jason Day and Christiaan Bezuidenhout edged out Max Homa and Brian Harman 1-up. Matsuyama and Im's flawless play left Cantlay and Schauffele, previously undefeated as a pair, without a single hole win.
International Team captain Mike Weir expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, stating their resilience and belief paid off. "To see their hard work and them sticking in there and us captains asking them to believe, couldn’t be happier. Just so proud of them," Weir said.
Team USA captain Jim Furyk recognized the challenge ahead and urged his players to come out firing, emphasizing the significance of the crowd's support. Echoing these sentiments, Tony Finau remarked, "It’s a dogfight, and I like my 11 guys in a dogfight over the next three rounds."
Veteran Adam Scott emphasized the need for consistent focus and effort to maintain momentum. "We’re going to have to be on it, be focused, and keep our levels high because that team’s no joke," Scott said.
International star Tom Kim praised the crowd's energy, contributing significantly to their Day 2 success. "The reason why we were able to play so good today was our fans backed us up," Kim stated.
With both teams driven and determined, the final two days promise intense competition as they fight for the Presidents Cup victory.
