Scientists Uncover the Impact of Zoom Backgrounds on Fatigue
Research reveals that using video or moving backgrounds during Zoom calls can lead to increased mental and physical exhaustion, commonly known as "Zoom fatigue."
Scientists from the Nanyang Technological University's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information in Singapore have found that video backgrounds constantly demand attention and cognitive resources by continuously presenting new information, unlike still or blurred images.
According to the study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, participants using nature-themed or light-hearted backgrounds reported lower levels of fatigue compared to those using other types of virtual backdrops or none at all. This conclusion stems from a survey of over 600 workers, aged 22 to 76, who worked from home about three days a week. The survey assessed the type of virtual backgrounds used—static images, blurred images, or video backdrops—and measured fatigue on a five-point scale, focusing on general, visual, social, motivational, and emotional fatigue.
Lead author Heng Zhang highlighted that static images initially capture attention but allow users to gradually shift focus. Blurred backgrounds avoid new information but occasionally still reveal the real environment, adding minor distractions. Video backgrounds, however, constantly intrude on attention, exacerbating fatigue.
Previous research has shown that video call participants spend significant time scrutinizing their appearance, contributing to mental tiredness.
The team discovered that more than 70% of respondents used virtual backgrounds, with still images being the most preferred. Among these, nature-themed and light-hearted images led to the least fatigue. Contrary to this, abstract and workplace-oriented images were less popular and increased the pressure to self-present, leading to higher levels of exhaustion.
Furthermore, the findings suggest that light-hearted or "funny" backgrounds might reduce video call fatigue even more than nature-themed ones. This is likely because such backgrounds lessen the stress of image management, making it easier for users to relax and disengage from impression management.
Heng Zhang posits that in professional settings, a nature-themed image background could be the optimal choice to lower Zoom fatigue, due to its minimal cognitive demands and relaxing properties.
Thus, for those looking to mitigate Zoom fatigue, opting for static, particularly nature-themed, backgrounds over video or highly formal settings can be an effective strategy.
