Sangria is traditionally made from wine and various fresh fruits, with vermouth and brandy added. Spain and Portugal are the only countries in the EU that are allowed to sell their flavored wine products under the name Sangria. This was reported by SSPDaily.

This is a great drink for summer days on a terrace overlooking the sea. In this article for the Detroit News, Spirits columnist Carrie M. Allan shared simple recipes for the refreshing drink.

Although sangria is related to mulled wine, it is not a drink for reflection. This drink has long gone beyond fruity red wines. Combine sangria with fruit liqueurs, fresh herbs and syrups, and mineral sparkling water.

Tips for making sangria

1. Don't buy an expensive "base".

There is no need to buy an expensive bottle for sangria, choose the one you like. Your friends will appreciate your choice if you don't attach importance to the symbols on the bottle. After all, the fruit in the bottle will hide any such sins.

2. Be sure to serve it chilled.

Some versions of sangria are served over ice or even with sparkling water. Keep sparkling water in the fridge to dilute the drink on a hot day.

3. Attention - sugar.

Liqueurs, syrups, and fruits should not be cloyingly sweet. Strike a balance and start with white wine, gradually adjusting the sweetness as you see fit.

4. Look for fruits and liquid additives that go well with others.

Test unexpected flavors. Let it be riesling, melon, and peaches. Perhaps it will be rosé wine with passion fruit or strawberries with grapefruit and sauvignon?

Create your own note, go beyond the banal.

5. Or chew.

These recipes often contain fruit particles, but you don't have to leave them in the bottle. Not everyone likes solid particles in a cocktail, and some people don't mind a snack.

Blackberry and elderberry sangria recipe

Sweet summer blackberries sometimes show up in the flavors of red wines, and a decent Pinot Noir (we used Mark West) makes a light and friendly base for this sangria, which gets a floral touch from the elderflower liqueur.

You can strain the blackberries or leave them in the drink. Don't forget your apron when mixing the fruit with the sugar.

  • For a recipe for 6-8 servings, take 5-6 cups of berries (300 g of fresh blackberries).
  • Add ¾ cup of sugar.
  • 1/2 cup elderflower liqueur, such as St. Germain.
  • 1/2 cup of tequila blanco.
  • Ice.
  • One (750-milliliter) bottle of Pinot Noir.
  • 1-2 cups (240-480 ml) of lemon-flavored sparkling water or blackberry-flavored seltzer water, if desired.
  • Blackberries, lemon slices, fresh rosemary sprig for garnish.
  • Cooking time: 20 minutes.
  • Chill the sangria base without garnish for 1 week.

To make the sangria:

Mix blackberries with sugar until they are juicy. Add the elderflower liqueur and tequila and stir until the sugar dissolves and you have a dark syrup.

Take a pitcher and fill it a quarter full of ice. Then add the wine.

Strain the syrup if necessary.

Fill a large pitcher about a quarter full of ice and add the wine.

Add sparkling water and garnish with sangria. It can be berries, lemon slices, or rosemary sprigs.

Strawberry vermouth sangria recipe

For this recipe, we recommend a sweet type of wine - Dolin Vermouth de Chambery.

  • The output should be 8 to 10 servings of the cocktail.
  • Cooking time: 10 minutes
  • Until completely cooled and infused: from 6 hours.
  • Storage recommendations: up to 7 days without a garnish of fresh strawberries.
  • 300 grams of ripe strawberries, cut into slices.
  • Fresh thyme - 10 pieces.
  • One (750 ml) bottle of dry vermouth, preferably Dolin
  • One (750 ml) bottle of blanc vermouth, preferably Dolin.
  • Ice for serving
  • 1 glass (240 milliliters) of sparkling water (optional)

Preparation of sangria:

Take a 4-quart jar or bowl in which to mix the berries and herbs.

Pour in both bottles of vermouth and stir.

Leave in the refrigerator for about 6 hours, but not for 1 day.

Fill a large pitcher about a quarter full with ice before serving.

Strain the berries if necessary.

Add the sparkling water and stir.

Fill the wine glasses, add a strawberry slice, pour the sangria and serve.

Passion fruit sangria recipe

This version of the drink will be very refreshing. If you add layers of bright passion fruit to rosé wine, you will get a bright and spicy tropical version of sangria.

  • The result should be 6 to 8 servings of sangria.
  • Cooking time: 10 minutes.
  • Recommended passion fruit syrup from Small Hands and Liber & Co,
  • Note: store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days without garnishes.
  • One bottle (750 ml) of dry rosé wine.
  • 3/4 cup passion fruit liqueur, such as Chinola
  • 3/4 cup passion fruit syrup
  • Ice for serving
  • Fresh mint (optional)
  • 4 halved passion fruit for garnish (optional)

Passion fruit sangria recipe

Combine wine, liqueur, and syrup in a container. Add some ice and stir. Muddle a sprig of mint to enhance the flavor.

Garnish each glass with half a passion fruit and mint.

Serve the sangria on the rocks.
