How to peel tomatoes effortlessly: simple methods
When you find yourself with an abundance of delicious tomatoes during the summer, it's the perfect time to whip up fresh tomato sauces, soups, and salsas. If you're planning to can whole tomatoes or tomato sauces, peeling the tomatoes becomes essential. Fortunately, there are two simple methods you can use to peel tomatoes, and one of them involves using the microwave. Follow the instructions prepared by SSP to quickly and efficiently peel tomatoes without hassle.
Method 1: Blanching Technique
1. Selection: Begin by choosing the best tomatoes for peeling. Look for medium to large tomatoes that are smooth, and without any blemishes or bruises. Opt for tomatoes that feel heavy for their size and emit a pleasant scent near the stem and a tomato-y aroma on the skin. If tomatoes are not in season, Roma tomatoes, readily available year-round in grocery stores, are an excellent option.
2. Prepare water and ice bath: Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil. Simultaneously, prepare an ice bath in a generously sized bowl by combining cold water and an ample amount of ice cubes.
3. Tomato preparation: Wash and dry the tomatoes, removing any stems. Then, using a paring knife, create a small, shallow X on the bottom of each tomato, opposite the stem end.
4. Blanche the tomatoes: Once the water reaches a boil, delicately drop the tomatoes into it. Allow the tomatoes to boil for approximately 30 to 60 seconds, closely monitoring smaller tomatoes that may need less time. The objective is to loosen the skin without precooking the tomatoes. You will notice the flesh wrinkling, and the skin starting to peel away. Using a slotted spoon or a strainer, transfer the blanched tomatoes to the prepared ice bath.
5. Peel with ease: Once the tomatoes have cooled enough to handle, remove them from the ice bath. The skin will easily slip off the tomatoes with a gentle touch. Use your fingers or a paring knife to assist in removing the skin in large sections.
Method 2: Microwave technique
1. Tomato preparation: Wash and dry the tomatoes, and remove any stems. Similar to the previous method, use a paring knife to create a small, shallow X on the bottom of each tomato.
2. Microwave: Take 1 to 2 tomatoes and place them in a microwave-safe container. Microwave them on high for approximately 25 to 30 seconds. Keep a close eye as the tomatoes may burst while microwaving.
3. Cooling and peeling: After microwaving, allow the tomatoes to cool, or expedite the process by transferring them to an ice bath. Once cooled, the skin can be effortlessly peeled off using your fingers or the blade of a paring knife.
By following these simple methods, you can peel tomatoes efficiently and effortlessly, unleashing the full potential of these versatile fruits in your culinary creations. Enjoy your freshly peeled tomatoes in various delectable dishes!
