Cats are many people's favorite pets. However, dealing with some of their habits, such as marking territory, can be difficult. SSPDaily has found out the reasons and effective ways to prevent this behavior.

Reasons for this behavior

Marking territory is a natural instinct of both young and adult cats. In this way, they claim their rights to a certain territory. It also helps sexually mature cats find potential mates. Different breeds of felines can start marking at different ages. This usually occurs between 5 and 12 months of age when they become sexually mature and are preparing to mate.

Neutering often curbs the natural habit of cats. However, there are cases when they continue to mark even after this procedure. Then you need to find out the physiological reasons.

Physiological reasons why neutered cats mark

  1. Habit. Cats can reflexively do this even after neutering.
  2. Resentment. Fluffy animals can express their displeasure or attract attention in this way.
  3. Fear. Leaving marks can be a way for cats to communicate when they feel threatened or afraid.
  4. Pain. They can show discomfort or pain in such a way.
  5. Jealousy. Competition, whether from another cat or a human.

How to deal with cat marking

Observant cat owners can quickly identify the cause of their cat's marking. If you are having difficulty, you should consult your veterinarian for specific recommendations. Before the visit, keep a record of your furry friend's behavior for several days to provide the veterinarian with all the important information.

If you have your cat spayed or neutered early, before it reaches puberty, you can avoid marking altogether or minimize the potential risks. Remember that your cat will feel more comfortable if you keep the litter box clean and change the litter more often.

Spend quality time with your cat as playing games and sharing favorite treats can minimize stress and reduce the tendency to mark.

Effective products to prevent cat marking

Cats can leave marks on a variety of surfaces, including upholstered furniture, which can be difficult to clean. However, there is a solution. At your veterinary pharmacy, you can purchase a spray that is recommended for treating areas where your cat often leaves marks.

Alternatively, your vet may suggest anti-marking pills. Experienced cat owners may opt for natural remedies. For example, they use odors that are unpleasant to cats. To do this, make a solution of crushed orange peel soaked in boiling water for two hours. Then add chopped lemon and liquid soap, strain the mixture, and treat the places your cat usually marks.
