Scientists explained why after a turbulent night of drinking, we feel intense hunger

After a night of drinking, tacos, pizza, or whatever is left in the fridge from the night before looks very appealing and usually goes straight into your stomach. And after a while, you get hungry again. And this can go on all day long.

SSPDaily writes: "Why do many people have an insatiable feeling of hunger after drinking a lot of alcohol, and what triggers it? Should we worry about this, because in a few hours of post-alcohol syndrome we eat a huge amount of high-calorie food."

What Did the Study Show?

Since obesity is a serious problem in America, researchers from the University of Buffalo decided to study the impact of binge drinking on weight gain. Students from the local campus became the subjects of the study.

"Given the obesity epidemic and the level of alcohol consumption on college campuses, we need to be aware not only of the negative effects of drinking, but also of what people eat while they drink," explained Jessica Krueger, clinical assistant professor of public health and healthy behavior at the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions.

The results of the scientific work explaining the link between alcohol consumption and consistent eating were published in the California Journal of Health Promotion.

In particular, the report states: "All heavy drinkers were more likely to eat something before bed after drinking alcohol than before bed in general."

Predictably, they preferred junk food. In addition, they didn't drink water or other soft drinks before bed, leading to even more dehydration.

As for the next morning, it turned out that students were less likely to skip meals after a night of drinking compared to a normal morning.

What Causes Unmotivated Hunger and How to Avoid It?

"It is believed that after drinking alcohol, the amount of glucose in the blood can increase or decrease, which stimulates the brain to feel hungry," Kruger explained.

How to avoid this? For every alcoholic drink you consume, drink twice as much water. And try to eat a large portion of healthy food beforehand to neutralize the alcohol as much as possible. Otherwise, you will wake up hungry the next morning with a killer hangover. Eating and hydrating may not completely eliminate these symptoms, but they will definitely lessen them.
