Algerian Judoka Disqualified Before Facing Israeli Opponent
In a disappointing turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, an Algerian judoka has been disqualified from a match against an Israeli opponent after failing the weigh-in. Messaoud Redouane Dris, aged 22, was set to compete against Tohar Butbul in the -73kg category on Monday. However, Dris exceeded the 73kg weight limit and was consequently removed from the competition, The Independent reported.
The Israeli Olympic Committee has accused Dris of intentionally avoiding the match against their athlete, expressing their disappointment in a statement. This comes as another setback for Algeria's chances of securing medals at the Olympics. The judo federation and the National Olympic Committee of Algeria have not yet provided any comments on the situation.
Meanwhile, Butbul advances to the next round with the hopes of replicating or even surpassing his success from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where he won a bronze medal in the judo mixed team event. It is worth noting that at the Tokyo Olympics, another Algerian judoka, Fethi Nourine, withdrew from a match against Butbul in the men's 73kg weight category. Nourine cited his support for Palestine as the reason for withdrawing but was subsequently issued a 10-year ban by the International Judo Federation.
This incident highlights the ongoing political tensions intertwined with sports. While Dris and Butbul's anticipated match cannot take place, today's 73kg showdown between Brazilian Daniel Cargnin and Kosovo Albanian Akil Gjakova will proceed, with both athletes vying to face Butbul in the next round. The allure of the Olympics lies in great sporting achievements, and it is disheartening when external factors disrupt the spirit of fair competition.
