Bayer Leverkusen Defeats AC Milan in Tense Champions League Match
Bayer Leverkusen maintained their flawless start to this season's Champions League with a tense home victory against AC Milan. Victor Boniface was instrumental in Xabi Alonso's team securing the three points, scoring the decisive goal in the 51st minute by capitalizing on a rebound after Milan's goalkeeper Mike Maignan had blocked Jeremie Frimpong's shot. Despite Milan's efforts—highlighted by Theo Hernandez's long-range attempt, which struck the bar with seven minutes left, and Alvaro Morata's close header that went wide—Leverkusen showcased their dominance for most of the match. They even had a potential goal in the 21st minute when Boniface connected with a fine Frimpong cross, only for VAR to disallow it due to an offside in the build-up.
Leverkusen, having begun their campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of Feyenoord, extended their brilliant form with this win, having scored five goals and conceded none in their two matches. Milan, on the other hand, faced their second defeat after a 3-1 loss to Liverpool in their opening match.
"It’s true that we didn't win, but it was the performance I liked the most since my arrival here," commented AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca, reflecting on his team's spirited second-half display where they created numerous chances but fell short against a robust Bayer side.
In the final minutes, both the pace and urgency of the match intensified. Boniface's solitary goal added spark to Milan, leading to multiple close attempts, with Youssouf Fofana making Lukas Hradecky work with two long-range shots. Frimpong missed a golden opportunity against Maignan, hitting the side netting instead.
Towards the end, an energized Milan nearly leveled when Hernandez's deflected shot hit the bar, followed by Morata's close rebound. Ruben Loftus-Cheek forced another save from Hradecky shortly thereafter.
Leverkusen's defense stood firm, while their offensive threat remained potent as they came near to doubling their lead with Nathan Tella's attempt in injury time, which passed narrowly wide, preserving their lead until the final whistle.
