Black Caviar, Champion Australian Racehorse, Dies at Age 17
The legendary Black Caviar, affectionately known as the 'Wonder from Down Under,' passed away just before her 18th birthday, The Guardian reported. The undefeated Australian mare achieved an impeccable record of 25 consecutive race wins between 2009 and 2013, making her a national hero.
Among her numerous achievements, Black Caviar clinched a vital victory at Royal Ascot's Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2012, elevating her international recognition. Trained by Peter Moody and predominantly ridden by jockey Luke Nolen, she was lauded as the world's best sprinter for four consecutive years and became Australian Racehorse of the Year three times. At the zenith of her fame, she had equaled the string of 14 straight victories set by Phar Lap, earning acclaim as the "fastest horse in the world."
Her trainer Peter Moody engraved Black Caviar's name into racing history, with a career that indicates an exceptional transformation from a relatively inexpensive purchase into a revered champion. In total, she accumulated nearly $8 million in prize money and was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.
Black Caviar's striking salmon pink and black-spotted silks made her one of the most recognizable figures in sports. She graced magazines such as Vogue, emphasizing her cultural impact beyond the racetrack. However, she had been battling laminitis, a painful hoof condition, and was humanely euthanized shortly after giving birth to a colt foal by Snitzel on the morning of her death.
The ownership group and racing community expressed immense sorrow but also reflected on her glittering success. Moody remarked, "It’s impossible not to get attached to most animals, let alone one like her." Similarly, the Victoria Racing Club's chair Neil Wilson highlighted her lasting legacy, noting, "She created a piece of history that will be remembered forever."
Luke Nolen, who rode Black Caviar to 22 of her 25 wins, expressed the profound emptiness left by her passing, emphasizing her significance not only in his professional journey but also in the sport of racing. Known for her dynamic performances and winning spirit, Black Caviar will forever be cherished as a remarkable athlete who gave her trainers, owners, and fans memories to last multiple lifetimes.
