Callum McGregor Retires from International Football
Celtic captain Callum McGregor has announced his retirement from international football, Sky Sports reported. McGregor, at 31 years old, earned 63 caps for Scotland and contributed significant moments such as scoring Scotland's first goal at a major men's tournament in 23 years during Euro 2020 against Croatia.
Reflecting on his career, McGregor expressed the honor he felt in achieving 63 caps and being inducted into the International Roll of Honour after representing the national side from the under-16 level and aiding their qualification for the 2020 and 2024 European Championships. While addressing his retirement, McGregor emphasized how difficult the decision was but believed it was the right time, after discussing it with Scotland head coach Steve Clarke. The midfielder acknowledged the invaluable experiences and achievements, like the memorable match in Serbia and scoring at Hampden Park while expressing pride in his dedication to Scotland's supporters.
McGregor stated, "Throughout my career, I wanted to give the absolute maximum for Scotland and represent the supporters with passion and pride." He noted his satisfaction in reaching two major tournaments despite wishing for greater success. Additionally, he thanked his managers, team-mates, the staff, and especially the Scotland fans for their passionate support. He wished future success to Clarke and the national team.
Clarke lauded McGregor's consistency, leadership, and professionalism, highlighting his impact on the national squad's resurgence. Describing McGregor as a low-maintenance player who leads by example, Clarke praised his dedication during training and matches. The chat between Clarke and McGregor, though it led to disappointment over the retirement, surfaced in mutual understanding. Clarke said McGregor will be missed by the team, coaches, support staff, and fans, and extended gratitude for McGregor's substantial contributions to their achievements.
