Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese etched her name in WNBA history in a 70-62 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, SSP reported. Reese became the first player to achieve a double-double in 10 consecutive games within a single season, showcasing her exceptional talent and consistency on the court.
Throughout the game, Reese demonstrated her dominance in rebounding, pulling down an impressive 16 boards. Needing just two points to reach double figures in scoring as well, Reese calmly sank two free throws with 23 seconds remaining, solidifying her record-breaking feat. This achievement surpassed the previous record of nine consecutive games held by Candace Parker, a former Sky player and two-time WNBA MVP.
Reese's incredible performance is not limited to this milestone; she had previously made waves as the first rookie to achieve a double-double in seven consecutive games during Chicago's victory against the Dallas Wings on June 20.
In a further display of recognition, Reese was later honored as BET's Sportswoman of the Year, adding another accolade to her already impressive resume.
Despite Reese's standout contributions, the Chicago Sky ultimately succumbed to a disappointing loss against the Minnesota Lynx, leaving them with a 6-11 record for the season. Reese faced some struggles in her shooting display, converting only four of her 16 field goal attempts.
Following the game, Chicago head coach Teresa Weatherspoon emphasized the positives and commended Reese's resilience. Weatherspoon expressed her pride in Reese's dedication and unwavering commitment to the game, also acknowledging Reese's self-critical nature.
Although the Sky initially held a double-digit lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 57-52 advantage over the Lynx, their offense stumbled in the final period. Struggling to find the basket, the team managed only five points in the entire quarter, allowing Minnesota to take control of the game and secure the victory.
For the Lynx, Kayla McBride led the scoring with 16 points, accompanied by five rebounds and five assists. Napheesa Collier and Alanna Smith also contributed with 13 and 11 points, respectively. In Chicago's efforts, Chennedy Carter led the way with 15 points, with Lindsay Allen, Marina Mabrey, and Angel Reese each scoring in double figures. However, the Sky's offensive struggles were evident, shooting a mere 30.5% from the field.
While the loss is disappointing for the Chicago Sky, Angel Reese's remarkable achievement remains a testament to her skill and determination. As she continues her promising career, Reese's impact on the game and potential for future success will undoubtedly be something to watch.
