Chivas Player's Firecracker Prank Sparks Controversy Among Mexican Media
Chivas winger Roberto Alvarado's attempt at a humorous prank using a firecracker during a club press conference in Verde Valle, Guadalajara, unexpectedly caused outrage among the Mexican media, Reuters reported. Many reporters perceived the incident as inappropriate, resulting in several walking out in protest.
Alvarado had thrown the explosive device into the press room ahead of Thursday's meeting, sparking accusations of aggression from attending journalists. Karina Herrera, a reporter present for nearly 15 years, expressed outrage, labeling the event on social media platform X as unprecedented and not a joke, as claimed, since the explosive hit the press room door with people inside. Additional reporters uploaded images and videos, documenting that the blast struck a cameraman's leg.
In the aftermath of the explosion, players José Castillo and Fernando Beltrán implored attendees to stay calm. The event rapidly went viral on social platforms, leading to Alvarado accepting responsibility and issuing an apology, stating the prank was intended as a jest among his teammates rather than involving reporters.
Even though some reporters eventually returned, the broader local press community denounced Alvarado's actions, further piling on criticism as the Chivas team struggles this season, languishing in the Liga MX standings at 10th place with 15 points earned from four victories in 10 matches.
