Coco Gauff's Historic Victory at the China Open
US tennis player Coco Gauff made headlines by winning the China Open final on Sunday, defeating Karolina Muchová 6-1, 6-3, CNN reported. At 20, Gauff became the first American since Serena Williams in 2013 to claim the title and the first woman in the Open era to win her first seven hard-court finals, now boasting eight WTA titles.
In her post-match speech, Gauff praised Muchová, acknowledging her as an amazing player despite her setbacks. She also extended gratitude to her team, emphasizing this victory as their first tournament together, following the inclusion of new coach Matt Daly after parting with Brad Gilbert. Gauff's performance was dominant, logging 24 winners and improving her head-to-head record against Muchová to 3-0.
Despite an early setback in the second set, Gauff quickly regained control, highlighting her physical prowess by committing only eight unforced errors to Muchová’s 24. The American swiftly established a 5-1 lead in the first set and overcame a brief falter in the second with strong net play. Muchová, having earlier bested top-notch competitors, struggled to match Gauff's intensity.
Aside from Gauff’s single matches, other tennis highlights include Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini securing their third WTA Tour title of the year in doubles. Gauff is set to compete at the Wuhan Open, further climbing the rankings.
Earlier, SSP wrote that atletico Madrid's Robin Le Normand was severely injured after the head collision.
