Cristiano Ronaldo Scores 901st Career Goal in Nations League
Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 901st career goal on Sunday, leading Portugal to a 2-1 victory over Scotland in the UEFA Nations League, reports CNN.
The 39-year-old forward scored in the 88th minute. His close-range tap-in completed a comeback after Portugal trailed early in Lisbon.
Scott McTominay opened the scoring for Scotland with a powerful header in the seventh minute. Despite consistent pressure from Portugal, the team struggled to find an equalizer initially.
Bruno Fernandes finally leveled the match in the 54th minute, firing in a shot from the edge of the area. Following this, Portugal pushed hard for a winning goal, with Ronaldo hitting the post. Scotland's goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, also made two outstanding saves to deny João Félix.
Just as a draw seemed likely, Ronaldo found space at the back post. He converted a dangerous cross from left-back Nuno Mendes for the winner.
This goal marked Ronaldo’s second during the international break. He scored his 900th career goal against Croatia just days earlier. His tally now includes 132 goals for Portugal, 450 for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus, 68 for Al Nassr, and five for Sporting Lisbon.
After the match, Fernandes — a participant in his 600th career game — highlighted Ronaldo’s significance to the team.
"The influence remains strong, whether he starts or not," Fernandes said. "Cristiano scored today, reaching 901, and he aims for a thousand."
Ronaldo's winner helped Portugal maintain a perfect start in the Nations League, accumulating six points and leading League A Group 1. Croatia sits in second with three points, following a 1-0 win against Poland.
Luka Modrić, turning 39 last Monday, scored the game’s only goal. He executed a beautifully curled free-kick just after halftime.
In other matches, Spain showcased its prowess, achieving a 4-1 victory over Switzerland. Joselu opened the score, and Fabián Ruiz quickly doubled the advantage.
However, Spain faced challenges after Robin Le Normand received a straight red card in the 20th minute. Zeki Amdouni scored for Switzerland, reducing the deficit shortly after halftime. Ruiz later added his second goal, restoring the two-goal lead before Ferran Torres sealed the win with a late strike for La Roja.
