Emma Raducanu Injured in Korea Open Quarter-Final
Emma Raducanu, the British number two, faced yet another injury setback during her Korea Open quarter-final against top seed Daria Kasatkina. Having struggled previously with an issue in her left foot during a match against Yue Yuan, Raducanu found it challenging to move comfortably from the beginning against Kasatkina. The 21-year-old was unable to serve effectively or chase down returns, ultimately needing a medical time-out after the fifth game. Despite breaking back after being broken early, she retired after losing the first set 6-1. This is prepared by SSP.
Following this, Kasatkina expressed her sympathy, stating, "I feel sorry for Emma. It's a pity to get injured, especially in the deeper stages of the tournament. I wish her a speedy recovery." Kasatkina will now proceed to the semi-finals to face her compatriot Diana Shnaider, who defeated Marta Kostyuk in a tight match postponed by rain.
Raducanu, aiming for her first semi-final above the WTA 250 level since her 2021 US Open win, has faced numerous injuries since that milestone. Restricted to only nine matches in 2023 due to surgeries on both hands and her left ankle, she managed a return with a second round exit at the Australian Open. Opting out of the French Open to prioritize fitness, she later reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, breaking back into the world's top 100. However, she faced a first-round defeat by Sofia Kenin at the US Open.
Trying to use the Korea Open as a means to gather more match play before the year's end, Raducanu’s recent progress in Seoul, which included victories over top-50 players like American Peyton Stearns and China’s Yue Yuan, added to her promising yet tumultuous season.
