England Captain Stokes Injured During The Hundred Match
Superchargers against the Manchester Originals in The Hundred at Old Trafford, BBC reported. Stokes, who was batting, picked up the injury after running a single. Initially tended to by physios, the 33-year-old captain was clearly in pain, even punching his leg in frustration before being carried off on a gurney.
Following his injury, doubts have arisen about Stokes' participation in the upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, set to commence at Old Trafford on 21 August. The Northern Superchargers have confirmed that Stokes will undergo an assessment, with results expected soon. His teammate and Superchargers captain Harry Brook commented on the incident, expressing concerns about Stokes' condition while revealing that the skipper is set for a scan.
Stokes, who had made a successful comeback this summer after recovering from knee surgery, sat out of both the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup to facilitate his recovery. His earlier efforts saw him leading England to a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies, where he took five wickets across three Tests.
This year's Hundred has marked Stokes' first participation since 2021. Despite tough performances earlier in the tournament – including a first-ball duck against Birmingham Phoenix and a paltry two runs against Welsh Fire – his skill was undeniable. Embarking on a chase of 153 against the Originals, Stokes had scored two runs before his injury forced him to retire injured.
Despite Stokes' unfortunate departure, the Superchargers secured victory by seven wickets, credit to a rapid 43 from Brook and a stellar 33-ball 66 not out from Nicholas Pooran. Brook also noted the uncertainty surrounding Stokes' fitness moving forward.
As the vice-captain Ollie Pope stands ready to lead, Stokes was last seen on crutches, deepening concerns about his immediate cricketing future.
Earlier, SSP reported that Emilio Gay was Set to Join Durham from Northamptonshire.
