Ipswich Signs Kalvin Phillips on Loan
Ipswich Town has finalized a season-long loan deal with Manchester City for England international Kalvin Phillips, The Guardian reported. Aiming to revive his career, Phillips joins the newly promoted club after an unsuccessful stint at City and a disappointing loan at West Ham. Acquiring Phillips is seen as a crucial move by Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, who expects the midfielder to add value to a squad eager to compete at the Premier League level.
Phillips, who cost City £45 million from Leeds two years ago, struggled to secure a starting spot and has faced both form and injury challenges. Despite being praised by City manager Pep Guardiola during the club's pre-season tour in the United States, Phillips was benched during the Community Shield against Manchester United.
Scheduled for a medical on Thursday, Phillips could be part of Ipswich's squad against Liverpool on Saturday, marking their first Premier League match since 2002. The move aims to help Phillips reclaim an England spot after he missed out on the Euro 2024 squad. With a strong reputation from his Leeds days, McKenna hopes Phillips can recapture his best form.
Ipswich's activity in the transfer market has been notable, including a club record £20 million acquisition of Chelsea's Omari Hutchinson. However, Phillips' loan has garnered significant interest beyond Suffolk. Although clubs like Everton and Fulham were also interested, Ipswich won the race.
Phillips' stint at City included only 31 appearances, and his future seemed uncertain as Guardiola remained unconvinced of his fit. Joining Ipswich provides Phillips an opportunity to shine once again.
