Ipswich Town Legend George Burley is Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Ipswich Town legend and former Scotland manager, George Burley, is undergoing cancer treatment, as announced by Ipswich Town. Diagnosed after experiencing health issues earlier this year, 68-year-old Burley has reassured fans about his recovery, stating, "It has been a difficult time, but I am feeling much brighter now. In fact, I am able to get to matches at Portman Road and I am enjoying watching the team playing back in the Premier League." Burley, who made 500 appearances for Ipswich from 1973 to 1985, has had an extensive playing career which also included stints with Sunderland, Gillingham, Motherwell, Ayr United, and Falkirk. After retiring as a player, he transitioned to a managerial role, beginning at Ayr and subsequently moving through several clubs, including Colchester United, Crystal Palace, Hearts, and Southampton. Notably, he managed Derby County from March 2003 to June 2005, achieving notable success such as advancing to the Division One play-offs.

As Ipswich's manager from 1994 to 2002, Burley led the team to Premier League promotion via the Division One play-off final, and in the 2000-01 season, he guided the team to an impressive fifth-place finish in the Premier League, securing a UEFA Cup spot and the manager of the season award. His tenure at Ipswich left a lasting legacy, acknowledged by current Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna who said, "This club has had some brilliant managers and George is right up there as one of the very best."

Derby County have also shown their support, with a message on their official X account stating, "Sending the club's best wishes to our former manager George Burley, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. You have the full support of everyone at Derby County, George."
