Las Vegas Aces' A'ja Wilson achieves milestone as the Franchise's all-time leading scorer
In a moment to remember, A'ja Wilson, the star player of the Las Vegas Aces, etched her name in the franchise's history books as the all-time leading scorer during a comfortable home victory against the Dallas Wings, SSP reported.
Wilson, a two-time WNBA MVP, contributed a phenomenal 28 points in the Aces' 104-85 triumph, surging past Sophia Young-Malcolm's previous record of 4,300 points to reach a total of 4,301 points. Not only did Wilson dominate on the scoring front, but she also added 10 rebounds, securing her 11th double-double of the season in the monumental game held at the Michelob Ultra Arena.
The game reached its historic moment when Wilson, the first overall draft pick by the Las Vegas franchise in 2018, sank two free throws late in the fourth quarter, surpassing the longstanding record. Reflecting on her achievement, Wilson expressed her gratitude and joy after the game, sharing, "It means the world, it does. It's a special moment. I didn't even know, honestly, until about the third quarter. Sydney [Colson] told me, she was like, 'Come on, this is your chance, you don't want to do it away, you want to do it at home.' And I was like, 'That is right.' So I'm so grateful to have this moment, my teammates sharing it with me, this crowd sharing it with me. But the job's not done. We still got a lot more we gotta learn and grow from, but I'm gonna take in this moment."
It is worth noting that Young-Malcolm achieved her scoring mark between 2006 and 2015 when the franchise played as the San Antonio (Silver) Stars before relocating to Las Vegas in 2017. The team has a long-standing history, being one of the original eight teams in the inaugural 1997 WNBA season and initially known as the Utah Starzz until 2002.
The Aces paid tribute to their rich history by bringing former stars, including Young Malcolm, to the court for a postgame celebration of Wilson's remarkable milestone. Reflecting on the significance of the moment, Wilson acknowledged, "It's all about growing the game. They laid the foundations for us to be able to wear this uniform today. Even though it's maybe a different color, a different city, they are the foundations, so to do this in front of them, it truly is something special."
Wilson's exceptional season continues to capture attention as she currently leads the league with an average of 27 points per game. Additionally, she remains a frontrunner for her third MVP title and seeks to achieve a historic three-peat with the Las Vegas Aces, following their championship wins in 2022 and 2023.
The decisive victory further boosted the Aces' record to 13-7 for the season. Kelsey Plum provided significant support with 23 points, while fellow All-Stars Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray contributed 18 and 12 points respectively.
Despite a commendable performance from Odyssey Sims, who delivered a season-high 25 points for the Wings, the team couldn't overcome the Aces' dominance. The Wings now join the Washington Mystics with the league's worst record at 5-17.
