Lee Valley Velodrome Installs Barrier After 2022 Crash
Lee Valley VeloPark will install a perspex barrier around its velodrome following a terrifying crash during the 2022 Commonwealth Games. This incident involved multiple riders and led to England's Matt Walls being thrown over trackside into the crowd.
The crash resulted in injuries to both cyclists and spectators. In response, Sir Chris Hoy and Dame Laura Kenny advocated for enhancements to velodrome safety. This is prepared by SSP.
Details About the Barrier
The venue will fit a 1.4-meter-high barrier around the track this month at a cost of £250,000. In a statement, Lee Valley highlighted that this installation represents a "UK first for an existing velodrome." It is expected to be one of only three retrofitted barriers of this type globally.
Lee Valley also reported consultations with cycling's world governing body, the UCI, during the barrier design process. The addition aims to elevate safety for both riders and attendees. The transparent screen will also enhance visibility for fans seated at lower levels.
Broader Venue Improvements
This barrier installation is part of a £750,000 improvement project scheduled for completion by the end of August. The enhancements follow an alarming crash on the final lap of the men’s scratch race qualifying heat. Matt Walls, Isle of Man's Matt Bostock, and Canada's Derek Gee were hospitalized; fortunately, none sustained major injuries.
