Before Miami Dolphins' season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police near Hard Rock Stadium for traffic violations including speeding and reckless driving, BBC reported. Supporting teammates, such as defensive tackle Calais Campbell, intervened and were also briefly detained. Campbell, witnessing the use of what he felt was excessive force, sought to de-escalate the situation but was placed in handcuffs for allegedly disobeying police orders. Hill told media that his teammates’ support meant a lot to him during this confusing situation.

Despite the pre-game turmoil, Hill excelled on the field, recording seven catches for 130 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown. Celebrating his touchdown by mimicking being handcuffed, this display and the pre-game incident caught significant media attention and went viral on social platforms.

Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels initiated an internal investigation into the officers' conduct during Hill's detainment, placing one officer on administrative leave. Daniels stressed her commitment to transparency and accountability, pledging a review of available bodycam footage.

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, described the incident as "heartbreaking" and expressed deep concern about how the scenario escalated. NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy stated the league has been in contact with the Dolphins but offered no additional comments. Hill himself marveled at the episode, pondering the potential racial dynamics and adding that he adhered to advice long given by his uncle to stay calm and cooperative in such situations.
