Naomi Osaka Parts Ways With Coach Wim Fissette
Naomi Osaka, former world No. 1, has announced her separation from coach Wim Fissette. After emerging from the US Open round last month, she revealed her frustration with her recent results. The two-time Grand Slam champion began collaborating with Fissette, a reputed Belgian coach, in 2020. They had two stints together, achieving significant victories, including the 2020 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open titles. This is prepared by SSP.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Osaka expressed her gratitude: "Four years, two Slams, and a lot of memories. Thanks, Wim, for being a great coach and an even greater person. Wishing you all the best." On his part, Fissette joined her once again in January 2023 following her comeback post-pregnancy leave, although recent performance reviews show limited progression, with only two quarterfinal appearances out of 16 tournaments.
Earlier, Osaka managed an upset by defeating Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of the US Open despite failing to go beyond the second round in any of the four Grand Slam events this year. She ended a significant ranking climb this summer, now being positioned at No. 75 after re-entering the WTA Top 100 on July 29.
In the background of the split with Fissette, Canadian writer Stephanie Myles reported that Osaka was seen training with Patrick Mouratoglou at UCLA and has been negotiating with him since just before the US Open. Pedigreed with various high-profile athletes, Mouratoglou holds promise for her upcoming ventures. Previously, Osaka worked with her father, Leonard Francis, and secured memorable achievements under Sasha Baijin's tutelage, including the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open titles.
