Olympic Medalist Tom Daley Announces Retirement From Diving
Five-time Olympic medalist Tom Daley has announced his retirement from diving. The 30-year-old diver, who made his debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics at age 14, shared in an emotional interview with British Vogue that the Paris Games would mark his last Olympic appearance. Daley, who has competed in five Olympic Games, retires as Team GB's most decorated diver. This is prepared by SSP.
In the recent Paris competition, Daley secured a silver medal alongside partner Noah Williams in the men’s synchronised 10m platform event, adding to a collection that includes gold in the synchronised 10m platform in Tokyo 2021, and multiple bronze medals from the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Daley expressed immense pride in his achievements. "It's always hard when you say goodbye to your sport," he said. "Lots of things to process, but I think it's the right time. I got to compete in front of my family, my kids, and be flagbearer. Bucket list ticked off on every occasion."
Daley first contemplated retirement after winning gold in Tokyo and took a two-year hiatus. However, he was drawn back into the sport by his six-year-old son Robbie, who expressed a desire to see his father dive at an Olympic Games. With his family, including husband Dustin Lance Black and their youngest son Phoenix, present in Paris, Daley decided that competing there would complete his athletic journey.
"Seeing my family in the audience, knowing it was my last dive, felt surreal and emotional," Daley shared. "But at some point, you have to make the decision, and it feels like the right time to call it a day."
As he transitions into retirement, Daley looks forward to spending quality time with his family. "I want to be with my family and feel a bit normal for a while," he said, closing an extraordinary chapter in his life.
This announcement follows an incredible career filled with highs, making Daley’s farewell a poignant moment for fans and the diving community alike.
