Republic of Ireland names John O'Shea assistant manager

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson underscored the importance of retaining John O'Shea, naming him as the assistant coach, Sky Sports reported. This decision follows O'Shea's interim managerial role for four friendly matches this year, stepping in after Stephen Kenny's departure in November. Initially expected to oversee games only in March against Belgium and Switzerland, O'Shea also managed the team in June fixtures against Hungary and Portugal amidst a delayed managerial appointment.

Hallgrimsson's Confidence in O'Shea

Expressing his commitment, Hallgrimsson, the former Iceland and Jamaica boss, stated, "Bringing John into the staff was a top priority. Upon traveling to Waterford for discussions, it became evident that our visions for the future were aligned. John’s enthusiasm for the role is fantastic."

Expanded Coaching Team

Paddy McCarthy, retaining his responsibilities at Crystal Palace, will resume his assistant coaching role. Additionally, Gudmundur Hreidarsson has been appointed as the goalkeeping coach, having worked with Hallgrimsson previously in Iceland and Jamaica. Damien Doyle continues as the Head of Athletic Performance, with plans to appoint a performance analyst soon.

O'Shea's Continued Dedication

Expressing his long-standing passion, O'Shea shared, "I'm committed to the Irish national team, both as a player and coach. I was thrilled when Heimir proposed I join his team. With alignment in our plans, I willingly accepted the role, ensuring continuity for Heimir alongside Paddy to support the squad through the forthcoming essential fixtures."

Key Matches Ahead

O'Shea will help navigate the Nations League campaign, starting against England on September 7 in Dublin, followed by a match against Greece. The transition aligns with England's new interim manager, Lee Carsley, a former team-mate of O'Shea, after Southgate’s Euro 2024 departure.

FAI Director of Football, Marc Canham, highlighted the necessity for continuity in the coaching setup. He emphasized, "Securing John, Paddy, and Gudmundur is crucial for Heimir and the players.
