West Ham United Signs Jean-Clair Todibo On Season-Long Loan
West Ham United have confirmed the acquisition of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo on a season-long loan, which includes an obligation to buy the player for £34.22 million (€40 million) in 2025. Initially, there was an agreement for a loan with an option to buy Todibo for €32 million (£27 million), but delays occurred as the player waited for a potential deal with Juventus. Tim Steidten, the technical director, finalized the deal after Juventus failed to reach an agreement, enabling even further competition with European clubs for Todibo’s signature. This is prepared by SSP.
Todibo, who has two senior caps for France and celebrates playing in the Premier League as a "dream come true," is expected to have a significant impact. Todibo remarked that he is "really excited" to join West Ham, referring to it as an "amazing opportunity" for growth and ambition under the new head coach.
The player initially emerged from Toulouse’s academy, later joining Barcelona in 2019, before loan stints with Schalke and Benfica, eventually solidifying his place at Nice in 2021. The 24-year-old center-back flew to London thanks to Steidten’s efforts and completed his medical on Friday. West Ham views him as one of the finest ball-playing center-halves in Ligue 1. Steidten noted their delight in successfully tracking and signing Todibo before the new season begins.
Steidten expressed gratitude to the board, acknowledging their support in securing a player like Todibo, who is approaching his peak years. Todibo marks the sixth signing under new manager Julen Lopetegui, joined by players such as Max Kilman, Luis Guilherme, Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez, and new addition Wes Foderingham. Additionally, more important investments include Crysencio Summerville from Leeds (£100 million expenditure in total).
This active approach reflects West Ham’s commitment and ambition, with the immediate challenge of beginning their 2024-25 Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on August 17. The summer transfer window will close on August 30 at 11 pm in the UK aligned with the Anthony-Racha major European leagues.
