Arsenal signs Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori for £42m
Arsenal has secured the signing of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, with the deal amounting to £42m, including potential add-ons. The 22-year-old player, who featured in all three of Italy’s group games at Euro 2024, has committed to a five-year contract with the Gunners, keeping him at the club until 2029. This is prepared by SSP.
Calafiori, who recently linked up with his new teammates in Philadelphia, expressed his elation at joining Arsenal. "I'm really happy to be here," he stated. "I waited a lot. I hope we are going to do something great this season." During a press huddle on Arsenal's pre-season tour in the USA, he further elaborated on his transfer: "I spoke for almost two months with the coach and with Edu. They tried to convince me, but I was already really convinced to come here. For me, it is the best project I can have as a player."
Having played 30 matches for Bologna last season in Serie A, scoring two goals and providing five assists, Calafiori’s versatility allows him to operate as both a central defender and a left-back, stemming from his origins as a left-back who could advance forward. Arsenal hopes that his ability to perform in multiple positions will bolster their defensive options as they aim for their first Premier League title in 21 years.
Mikel Arteta, describing the acquisition as a "great signing," noted, "Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies. He has already shown great development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy." Arteta is enthusiastic about integrating Calafiori into the squad and aiding his future development.
Calafiori’s impressive records include being named Serie A's player of the month in May and winning all five of his senior Italy caps this summer. He debuted professionally with Roma in 2020, followed by a loan spell at Genoa, and then moved to Basel in 2022 before Bologna acquired him.
Although clubs like Juventus and Chelsea were linked with him, Calafiori saw Arsenal as the best fit. "There were other clubs, but I don't care anymore, I’m here and I want to improve to win trophies… the team is young and strong, and I like this."
Arteta’s side is also rumored to be transferring midfielder Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham for an initial £27m plus potential incentives of £7m, underscoring their drive to make significant roster adjustments this season.
