Chelsea Finalizes Felix and Gallagher Transfers: An End and a Beginning
Chelsea has successfully signed Portuguese forward Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid for approximately £45 million while confirming England midfielder Conor Gallagher's transfer to Atletico for roughly £33 million, BBC reported. Felix, rejoining Stamford Bridge on a seven-year contract, tallied four goals in 20 appearances during his 2023 loan period. Expressing enthusiasm about his return, Felix remarked, "I’m really happy to be back at Chelsea and I can’t wait to get started. Seeing familiar faces from my previous stint is also pleasant."
Conversely, Gallagher has committed to a five-year contract with the Spanish La Liga side. Joining Chelsea at six, Gallagher made 90 appearances and netted 10 goals. Approaching the end of his contract, the club opted to sell him to avoid a free transfer scenario next summer. Sharing his appreciation on Instagram, Gallagher wrote, "To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true. It has been an absolute honor to wear this shirt and to captain the team. These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans."
Gallagher experienced prominent loan spells at several clubs, including Charlton, Swansea, West Brom, and Crystal Palace, before breaking into the Chelsea first team in the 2022-23 season. He has also earned 18 England caps since debuting in 2021 and made the squads for both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.
BBC Sport's Nizaar Kinsella noted that Gallagher's departure would be bittersweet for many Chelsea supporters who adored him deeply. Fans even protested his expected exit in a match against Tottenham. Although some comfort can be taken in his move abroad rather than to a Premier League rival like Manchester United, where Mason Mount now plays, the overall sentiment remains mixed.
Chelsea honored Gallagher's departure with an emotive video package celebrating his long-standing relationship with the club. The conclusion of his "strange transfer saga," which featured him training in limbo, allows Gallagher to refocus on his future under Atletico manager Diego Simeone's dynamic and high-energy style. This sequence of events represents a positive end to an unusual set of circumstances.
