Colombia Football Federation head arrested for battery incident
The head of the Colombian Football Federation, Ramón Jesurún, and his son have been apprehended following an altercation during Sunday's Copa América final in Miami. The Miami-Dade Police Department has charged Mr. Jesurún, aged 71, and his son, Ramón Jamil Jesurún, aged 43, with battery offenses involving an official or employee. This is reported by SSP.
The incident occurred shortly after Colombia's 0-1 defeat to Argentina in extra time. The father-son duo had not publicly commented on the matter at the time of reporting. According to a statement provided by the Miami-Dade Police Department to the BBC, the brawl took place after the match, outside the field entrance at Hard Rock Stadium in southeastern Florida.
As the Jesurúns were walking towards the entrance, a security officer, acting on instructions from managerial personnel, temporarily prevented them from advancing. In response, both father and son became agitated and began shouting at the security officer. The police report indicated that Mr. Jesurún pushed the officer, while his son escalated the situation by grabbing the officer's neck, pulling him down, and assaulting him physically.
Additionally, the son forcefully pushed a female official who tried to intervene, according to law enforcement. The report further detailed that both men assaulted a security manager during the altercation. It is believed that Mr. Jesurún, his son, and other family members intended to access the field to partake in the awards ceremony. At present, the Colombian Football Federation has refrained from making any public statements concerning the incident.
Delayed commencement of the prestigious football tournament's final took place due to unauthorized individuals forcibly entering the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. This caused an 80-minute delay while law enforcement and security personnel dealt with the situation. Multiple arrests were made as clashes ensued between the ticketless fans and the authorities, with several individuals requiring medical attention from paramedics.
