As an ardent watermelon enthusiast herself, she provided us with the solution I was searching for.

The Key Lies in Proper Storage

The challenge with cut watermelon lies in its tendency to absorb odors. Within the confines of your refrigerator, an array of scents can permeate the air, whether it be the lingering scent of garlic from yesterday's pizza wrapped in foil, or the aroma of pungent cheese. Unfortunately, if the watermelon is exposed to these odors, it can alter the taste and leave you with a fruit that is far from its original delectability.

In order to combat this issue, Barlow recommends utilizing airtight storage. She advises, "Ensure that your cut watermelon is sealed and shielded from the circulating air." Whether you opt to store the cut watermelon in a Ziploc bag, a food storage container (made of plastic or glass) with a snug-fitting lid, or by tightly covering it with clear plastic wrap, any of these methods will safeguard the freshness and flavor of the watermelon while residing within the refrigerator. The essential aspect to remember is that the seal must be airtight, preventing any air from entering or escaping.

Though it may be tempting to lazy toss that bowl of cubed watermelon or platter of sliced wedges into the refrigerator without taking the time to cover them, it is highly advisable to store them properly in an airtight container. Even if you plan on consuming the fruit later that day, it can quickly absorb undesirable refrigerator odors. By taking precautions and sealing it properly, you will be rewarded with the remarkable, sweet essence of summer that you have grown to cherish.
