Humphries Advances to Semi-Finals at World Grand Prix
Defending champion Luke Humphries showcased impressive form by defeating 2021 titleholder Jonny Clayton with a 3-1 victory, propelling him into the World Grand Prix semi-finals in Leicester, BBC reported. Currently ranked as the world number one, Humphries began the match with a solid start but found himself even at 1-1. His performance peaked with an outstanding 146 checkout, allowing him to bounce back from being two legs down to capture the third set and ultimately secure his win.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Humphries expressed his unusual nerves during the match, stating, "It is hard playing your friends but I just felt nervous, It is really not like me. There is an opportunity to win again and maybe I am trying too hard. Jonny was unlucky there, he could probably have had the third set, that 146 changed everything." Acknowledging the impact of luck on his journey, he remarked on his pursuit of perfection and remaining in the competition despite challenges.
His next challenge is against Ryan Joyce in a best-of-nine semi-final match. Joyce, at 39, persisted in the competition, defeating fourth seed Rob Cross 3-2. Cross showed skill by securing the initial set with an 11-dart leg but faltered in the subsequent sets, which led to Joyce securing his first semi-final appearance due to Cross’s missed opportunities.
On a different note, Mike de Decker from Belgium captured a 3-0 victory, eliminating two-time champion James Wade in a close encounter where each set neared a deciding leg. De Decker is set to compete against compatriot Dimitri van den Bergh, who smoothly surpassed Joe Cullen 3-1 in preparation for the next stage.
