Ireland set to introduce new face against Springboks
Debutant Jamie Osborne has been named as the starting full-back by Ireland head coach Andy Farrell for their upcoming match against South Africa. The Leinster player will take up the position typically held by Hugo Keenan, who is currently focused on the Paris Olympics with Ireland's sevens team. While the expectation had been for Jimmy O'Brien to feature at full-back, Farrell has opted for Osborne, who has experience primarily in the center position, SSP reported.
Another significant selection sees Craig Casey stepping in for the injured Jamison Gibson-Park at scrum-half. Despite having 14 caps, this marks Casey's fifth start for the side. Veteran Conor Murray will be among the substitutes for the game.
In other positions, Robbie Henshaw has been chosen ahead of Garry Ringrose to partner Bundee Aki in the midfield, while the second-row partnership of Tadhg Beirne and Joe McCarthy will continue. The back row consists of captain Peter O'Mahony, Josh van der Flier, and Caelan Doris. James Lowe and Calvin Nash will take up positions on the wings.
On the bench, Farrell has balanced five forward players with three backs. The absence from the tour due to injury includes Hugo Keenan and winger Mack Hansen, who has previously scored tries against South Africa.
The chosen starting XV for the match against South Africa in Pretoria adheres to the guidelines and recommendations set out by Irish head coach Farrell, emphasizing the importance of the new talents in the team while maintaining a familiar structure with experienced players in key positions.
