Joel Embiid Extends Contract with Philadelphia 76ers
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has signed a three-year extension worth nearly $193 million, according to reports. Embiid, the MVP of the 2022-23 season, has been with the Sixers since the 2014 NBA Draft and aims to help the team win its first championship since 1983. This is prepared by SSP.
"I started as a Sixer and want to be here for the rest of my career," Embiid stated. "I was a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon when I was drafted and I had no idea how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia. Through all the ups and downs, the city and the fans have meant everything to me, and I'm grateful for how they welcomed me. It's time to bring this community an NBA championship."
The Sixers, while not specifying contract details, have confirmed the extension, with a player option for the 2028-29 season according to ESPN and 'The Athletic'.
Josh Harris, an executive with the team, emphasized Embiid’s importance in the franchise’s pursuit of another NBA title.
76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey praised Embiid, saying, "Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game."
Embiid moved to the U.S. at 16 and went to the University of Kansas. Last season, he averaged 34.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.6 assists. Earlier this year, Embiid was diagnosed with the facial condition Bell's palsy.
