Lille's Angel Gomes Hospitalized After Head Injury During Match With Reims
Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, formerly of Manchester United, was taken to the hospital following a severe head injury sustained during a Ligue 1 match against Reims. The injury occurred in the 11th minute after a collision with Reims defender Amadou Kone, who was sent off for the challenge. Gomes, 23, was treated on the pitch for 17 minutes causing a 34-minute delay before being transported to the hospital. This is prepared by SSP.
Lille players and Reims supporters showed immediate concern, with Lille’s team forming a protective circle around Gomes and fans chanting his name. Kone was visibly troubled after the incident, seen praying for Gomes in the changing room after his dismissal.
Lille later assured that Gomes had regained consciousness and was in good spirits, even humorously inquiring about playing next Saturday. The club's statement revealed, "Angel Gomes has regained consciousness and has been transferred to the hospital. All our thoughts are with him." Lille coach Bruno Genesio noted the relief felt upon learning of Gomes’ stable condition: "Angel was conscious when carried out. He showed he’s in good spirits but we have to wait a bit."
The game resumed in the 45th minute with an added 34 minutes for the first half. Goals from Bafode Diakite and Jonathan David secured a 2-0 victory for Lille. Diakite held up Gomes’ No. 8 shirt in tribute after scoring.
Lille president Olivier Letang mentioned, "Angel is doing quite well but we'll wait for additional tests." Manchester United offered support via social media, expressing love and strength for Gomes.
Gomes joined Manchester United’s academy at six and made his Premier League debut in 2017. He moved to Lille in August 2020 on a free transfer and has made over 100 appearances for the French club. Additionally, he earned 18 caps for England’s Under-21s between 2021 and 2023.
