Manchester United extends Erik ten Hag's contract until 2026
Manchester United Football Club has taken the initiative to trigger a one-year extension in Erik ten Hag's contract, ensuring his tenure at the club will now continue until 2026. Ten Hag, who joined United from Ajax in 2022, has been successful in clinching two trophies for the club during his time as coach, SSP reported.
Expressing his delight, the 54-year-old stated, "I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together." He also took the opportunity to reflect on the progress made in the past two years and the pride associated with winning trophies.
Although acknowledging the achievements, Ten Hag emphasized the need for continued hard work in the future. His first season with United saw them secure a third-place finish in the Premier League, ending a six-year trophy drought with a victory in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.
However, the second season proved to be more challenging as the team struggled, finishing eighth in the Premier League and failing to progress past the group stages in the UEFA Champions League. Only a significant FA Cup final win against Manchester City saved Ten Hag's position.
Following this victory, United conducted a review of the team's performance, exploring potential replacements for Ten Hag. Ultimately, the club's owners, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, decided to retain the Dutchman given his achievements and the implementation of an improved structure within the club's management.
Sir Dave Brailsford, Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, and Dan Ashworth have taken up senior positions within the revamped board structure, demonstrating the commitment to reinforcing the football leadership team.
Sporting director Ashworth expressed confidence in the capabilities of the players and coaching staff, emphasizing the need for consistent success. With a strengthened leadership team, United aims to work closely with Ten Hag to achieve their shared ambitions for the club.
Negotiations are in progress to restructure Ten Hag's backroom staff, with the potential return of former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and the inclusion of Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake in the revamped coaching setup.
The renewal of Ten Hag's contract was largely expected, and although the formal terms have remained unchanged, the decision signifies the club's intention to continue with the Dutchman at the helm. With a new football structure in place, Ten Hag will face increased expectations and will be expected to deliver consistent positive results. Another disappointing season, akin to the eighth-placed finish, would put his future at United in jeopardy.
