Marseille Completes Signing of Mason Greenwood from Manchester United
In a notable transfer deal, Marseille has officially signed forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, marking his move to the club until 2029, BBC noted. This transfer comes with a substantial price tag, potentially reaching 31.6 million euros (£26.6 million).
The 22-year-old Greenwood, a product of Manchester United's renowned academy, had been on loan at Getafe in the previous season and had not played for his parent club since January 2022. Notably, serious charges, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped against him in February 2023.
Marseille's intention to sign Greenwood sparked controversy, drawing criticism from the Marseille mayor after the news became public. Despite the controversy, Greenwood's potential represents an opportunity for the French club to strengthen their attacking options.
Greenwood made his competitive senior debut for Manchester United as a substitute in the Champions League against Paris St-Germain in 2019. Throughout his tenure at United, he scored an impressive 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned a single cap for the England national team in 2020.
However, Greenwood's time at Manchester United came to an end with a mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. Consequently, he joined Getafe in La Liga, where he showcased his skills by scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances – a resurgence that revitalized his career.
In solidarity with Greenwood's new chapter at Marseille, Manchester United wished him well on their official website, cementing a positive and amicable departure from the club. Furthermore, the deal includes a significant sell-on clause that ensures Manchester United can potentially benefit from any future transfers involving the talented forward.
On his journey with Marseille, it is interesting to note that Greenwood's first game back in England might occur in a pre-season friendly against Sunderland. Due to renovations at the Stadium of Light, the match is scheduled to take place on August 3rd at Bradford City's Valley Parade – a venue with personal significance as Greenwood was born and raised in Bradford.
