"No problems" anticipated for Fernandez's inclusion in Chelsea tour
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is confident that midfielder Enzo Fernandez will seamlessly join the team on their upcoming US pre-season tour, despite the ongoing disciplinary proceedings regarding alleged racism. The 23-year-old midfielder faced accusations from the French Football Federation for participating in a "racist and discriminatory" chant following Argentina's triumph in the Copa America, BBC reported.
The chant in question contains lyrics that raise doubts about the heritage of black and mixed-race players in the French national team. Fernandez's Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana, who has represented France once, brought attention to the incident by exposing it on Instagram, categorizing it as "uninhibited racism." FIFA has initiated an investigation into the matter, and Fernandez has expressed remorse for his actions through an apology.
Maresca shared his perspective, stating, "Both the player and the club have offered sincere apologies, making it a straightforward situation. I don't believe there is any further addition needed in terms of addressing the issue. It has already been clarified." When questioned about any potential discord within the squad, considering Chelsea's seven black or mixed-race players from France, Maresca replied, "I genuinely don't think so. They are all human beings, and I don't believe any one of them harbors ill intentions. Upon Enzo's return, I don't expect any complications. Enzo has clarified his stance, and the club has done the same, leaving no room for ambiguity. These individuals are not bad people; they are all good human beings. While mistakes can happen, I am confident that there won't be any problems at all. I have personally spoken to Enzo and all the players involved."
With the captain, Reece James by his side, Maresca also offered insights on the upcoming match against Wrexham in Santa Clara. James acknowledged the complexity of the situation and Fernandez's swift acceptance of his error, expressing his hope for progress moving forward. He stated, "Enzo has yet to rejoin the team. When he does, I will consider the circumstances and decide whether my involvement is necessary. I aspire to see everyone move past this incident. I have spoken to Enzo and all those concerned, but the details of those conversations must remain confidential."
