Philadelphia Union Midfielder, Cavan Sullivan, Breaks MLS Record as Youngest MLS Player
Fourteen-year-old Cavan Sullivan has made history as the youngest player ever to compete in Major Soccer League (MLS). Representing Philadelphia Union, Sullivan achieved this remarkable feat by coming on as an 85th-minute substitute in their 5-1 victory over New England Revolution at Subaru Park in Pennsylvania, according to BBC Sport. England-born Sullivan is set to join Manchester City when he turns 18, further adding to his promising prospects.
Breaking the previous record held by Freddy Adu, who debuted for DC United in 2004 at the age of 14 years and 306 days, Sullivan's playing time at the age of 14 years and 293 days made him the youngest-ever MLS player. Furthermore, Sullivan's achievement in MLS also gained him the title of the youngest North American player to participate in a top-flight team sport.
Interestingly, Sullivan's older brother, Quinn, was among the goal-scorers in the Philadelphia Union's triumphant match against the New England Revolution. Cavan expressed his excitement about his brother's goal, describing it as an "awesome finish" amidst the chaos of the game. He shared his exhilaration about the overwhelming reaction from the crowd, with the stadium reverberating in sheer excitement.
However, Sullivan remains level-headed about his accomplishments, acknowledging that this is merely the beginning of his journey. He embraces the mentality that success lies not in where one starts but where one finishes. The young midfielder is already focused on the next goals and dreams to attain.
Former record holder Freddy Adu, now 35, praised Sullivan for surpassing his age record and offered his congratulations along with best wishes. Adu stated that the feat of breaking such a significant record is no mean feat and commended Sullivan for the achievement.
Sullivan's move to Philadelphia Union in May was part of the biggest homegrown player deal in MLS history. Expressing his decision to join Philadelphia, Cavan highlighted the crucial collaboration between Union and City Group. The affiliation between his current team and his future destination, Manchester City, enticed Sullivan, as every young player dreams of joining the latter. Viewing this partnership as his best option, Sullivan expressed his excitement about the prospect of advancing both his personal development and career trajectory.
Union manager Jim Curtin greatly values Sullivan's capabilities, considering him a generational talent who has the potential to revolutionize the game. With his impressive debut already etched in the MLS records, the sky seems to be the limit for Sullivan's future in soccer. For now, though, he remains focused and committed to his continuous growth and improvement.
