Raw Meat Served as Olympic Village Rations Highlighted Amid Food Shortages
The much-anticipated Paris 2024 Olympics, which boasted about providing Michelin chef-catered meals for athletes, are facing significant challenges when it comes to the quality and availability of food. Team GB, in particular, has been forced to take matters into its own hands by flying in its own chef and resorting to packed lunches due to a shortage of high-protein items and the serving of uncooked meat, The Times reported.
According to Andy Anson, the chief executive of the British Olympic Association, the food in the Olympic Village is deemed "inadequate," calling for a dramatic improvement in the situation. Some British athletes have even opted to bring their packed meals for dinner, expressing disappointment in the quality and quantity of the available food. Raw meat being served to athletes is one of the alarming concerns raised, along with shortages of eggs, chicken, and certain carbohydrates. Recognizing these issues, catering organizers have acknowledged the supply challenges and pledged to rectify the situation promptly. However, there are growing concerns about the availability and quality of food in the coming days.
Team GB's athletes have decided to dine outside of the Olympic Village, preferring to eat in their performance lodge in Clichy. This has compelled the team to bring in an additional chef to accommodate the unexpectedly high demand for meals. Ensuring that the athletes have an advantage by having access to adequate food has become the primary concern for the team.
With approximately 40,000 meals prepared daily in the athletes' village and a main restaurant capacity of 3,300 seats, the situation highlights a pressing need for improvement in the catering operations. Athletes have noticed the contrast with previous Olympics, such as Tokyo 2021, where food arrangements were significantly better organized.
Sodexo Live, the catering company overseeing the food services, has stated that it is taking athletes' feedback seriously and actively working to increase supplies, especially of high-demand items like eggs and grilled meats. They aim to satisfy the needs and preferences of athletes, recognizing the importance of a well-balanced and sufficient diet for optimal performance.
While Team GB's rowers have chosen to stay in a separate hotel for logistical reasons, they too have expressed gratitude for the higher quality of food provided in their accommodation compared to the Olympic Village. This stark contrast between the two catering experiences highlights the current challenges faced by organizers in delivering suitable meals to the athletes.
