Ryan Garcia expelled from WBC for racist comments
In a turn of events, Ryan Garcia, a once-promising boxer, has plummeted further into controversy with a string of hateful comments online. These remarks have resulted in his expulsion from the World Boxing Council (WBC), a prominent governing body in the sport. This is prepared by SSP.
Over the past few weeks, the suspended athlete has been posting alarming and unhinged statements. However, his recent comments were met with severe backlash, as he used derogatory slurs, expressed hatred towards Black individuals, and made a disturbing remark regarding George Floyd.
Garcia's offensive comments extended even beyond these examples. Notably, he displayed no intention of offering any form of apology. Shortly after these incidents, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman announced Garcia's expulsion from the organization. Sulaiman also mentioned that Garcia had declined assistance from the WBC in managing his mental health and substance abuse struggles.
Following this development, Garcia's parents released a statement disavowing their son's comments and emphasized the need for him to seek help. The statement outlined that Garcia's remarks contradicted their family's values and beliefs and did not reflect his true character.
Presently, Garcia is awaiting the conclusion of a one-year suspension due to testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Ostarine. This positive test nullified a notable victory he achieved against WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney. Although Garcia's legal team has provided evidence attributing the positive test to supplement contamination, the victory stands as a no-contest.
The suspension and subsequent expulsion mark another unfortunate chapter in Garcia's public decline since the beginning of 2024. Within a brief span of six months, Garcia has faced numerous challenges:
- Announced a divorce immediately after his ex-wife gave birth to their son.
- Lost a $1.5 million bet to Haney by failing to make weight.- Tested positive for Ostarine.- Engaged in an unhinged tweet storm where he referenced using steroids.
- Got involved in a defamation lawsuit against Logan Paul's energy drink company.
- Became entangled in a dispute with Paul over purportedly fabricated text messages related to the Gaza strip.- Got arrested for felony vandalism at a Beverly Hills hotel.
- Experienced hospitalization following the aforementioned arrest.- Received a one-year suspension, resulting in the loss of his career-defining win and significant financial consequences.
At this juncture, it remains unclear when or if Garcia will return to the boxing ring. However, his current state strongly indicates that he is in need of assistance and support.
